The beginning

The idea of taking people across the most notorious stretch of water in Australia seemed crazy, if not foolhardy. However, after meticulous planning, drawing on lived-experience and convincing the right people, it became a reality in October 2014.

Before the event existed, a handful of swimmers were already quietly making the crossing themselves, but this was frowned upon by authorities, and in a legal grey area nobody wanted to talk about. The Rip Swim turned that into something open, safe, and celebrated: a way for everyday swimmers to take on an unforgettable challenge safely, and experience one of the most spectacular waterways in the country.

Adversity

In 2025, an incident almost ended the swim. Hear what was done to ensure its continued success. Adversity can build strength.
